Moldova isn't in NATO, so I suspect it would be the next country after Ukraine on Russia's hit list.

I feel like that when I hear Zoryana's rendition of "March of Ukrainian Nationalists": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R7MTG-rGCo

Surely the limiting factor is how long it would take to train 1000 Ukrainian Abrams crews?

I suspect some conservatives are still deluded enough to think they can ally with Russia against China (even though that ceased to be a realistic possibility after roughly 2008) while others perhaps hope for another world war that will leave Europe and Asia in ruins (and thus a virtual captive market for American goods, just like in the glory days of the 1950s).

There's also the fact that many of the European Senate-equivalents have far less power, plus the fact that US-style presidential democracies have potential conflicts between the President and Congress (as they're separately elected) that do not exist in parliamentary democracies.

I thought the issue of secession from the United States was settled at Appomattox in 1865?

@murphy7801 France is a semi-presidential system, where executive power is shared between a (directly-elected) president and an (appointed by parliament) prime minister. Pure presidential democracy is rare outside the Americas: it is only dominant there because the US was the only real model existing for republican government when most Latin American countries became independent, and its inherent flaws were a significant contributor to Latin American political instability during the 20th century.

The biggest European country with a unicameral parliament is in fact Ukraine itself, while Portugal, the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic states also have unicameral parliaments.

The difference is that a prime minister is the head of the biggest party in the legislature, while a president is separately elected (either directly or via an electoral college with no other function). And in addition to purely presidential systems (like the US and most other countries in the Americas) and purely parliamentary systems (like the UK) there are also semi-presidential systems like France where a president and prime minister share power.

@MrBlaxjax No, the fact that the Irish presidency (like the British monarchy) is essentially a purely ceremonial position demonstrates that Ireland is a parliamentary system.
