Fidd88 Much of Western Ukraine including Lviv and Ternopil was ruled by Poland between the wars: the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists was founded there as a terrorist organization to try to regain an independent Ukrainian state. They hoped for German help against Ukraine's Soviet and Polish oppressors, and in June 1941 they attempted to declare Ukrainian independence, only to have most of their leadership arrested by the Gestapo: the Germans saw Ukraine not as a worthy ally but simply as fertile farmland ideal for German colonization. Those OUN activists that did get away formed the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) which fought against the Germans, the Poles and the Soviets simultaneously, and which were only finally defeated by the USSR in the 1950s. It is notable that once Ukrainians began again to see Russia as an enemy (following the theft of Crimea and the ongoing war in the Donbas) they embraced a lot of their OUN and UPA heritage, such as the "Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava" ("Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!" -- Jake himself uses it to round up his shows!) call-and-response greeting, plus the anthem "Zrodylys' my velykoyi hodyny" ("We were born in a great hour"), a modified version of which is now the anthem of the Ukrainian armed forces.
