  1. IIRC when coal mining was first established in the Donbas during the late 19th century, the Ukrainians mostly weren't willing to become miners so the mine owners recruited miners from central Russia instead.

  2. Jake explains why leading Trumpist politicians are anti-Ukraine, but what explains the stance of ordinary MAGA people? I see two possibilities: 1. They suck up to Russia because their lifestyles are dependent on large amounts of oil and gas, of which Russia still has some of the largest reserves. 2. They dream of returning to the American golden age of the 1950s, and recognize that this came about because World War II had destroyed almost all of America's industrial competitors. Therefore they don't want this century's aggressor empires to be defeated too early, as they want Xi and Putin to do in the 21st century what Hitler and Tojo did during the 20th: start a war that will reduce Europe and Asia to ruins (before being ultimately defeated) while leaving North America conveniently unscathed.
