I suspect the West's reaction to Russia's 2014 theft of Crimea was muted for the same reason that Hitler was appeased over the Sudetenland: because the aggressor's ethnicity was a majority of the population in the territory in question.

B-52s were great for pounding enemies like the Taliban with minimal anti-air capability, but would be no match for Russian air defences: there's a reason why the skies over Ukraine are basically ruled by missiles and drones. The only thing that would really be a game-change for Ukraine in the air war is if they were supplied with F-35s or other stealth aircraft, which realistically isn't going to happen.

@-Yurkey Nukes may not be a war-winning weapon, but they're still an excellent "take the bastards with me" vengeance weapon. After all, today's nuclear ICBMs are basically the more developed successors of Hitler's V-2 rockets, which were literally labelled as a "vengeance weapon".

@BassPhat Surely the fear is that Putin will fire the nukes because he's losing so badly that he figures he's a dead man anyway, so he might as well "take the bastards with me"? Remember that today's ICBMs are just the highly-developed successors of Hitler's V-2 rockets, literally labelled a "vengeance weapon".
