Wasn't it cotton farming that destroyed the Aral Sea in Central Asia?

Has covering your head ever caused someone to think you were Muslim?

@leenmattar3983 I think my question was more a rhetorical one, that you'd expect our materials scientists to be able to produce fabrics superior to natural ones.

If you're talking about the decline of modesty (for example the flapper era of the 1920s or the miniskirt era of the 1960s) then a surplus of females over males (which empowered men to seek sex without the strings of marriage) was the likely driver, as women competed for a smaller number of men. In the 1920s the female surplus was a product of the First World War (which is also why Paris was the iconic party town of that decade) while in the 1960s it was a product of the post-WWII baby boom combined with the fact that women normally look for men a few years older than themselves. The rise of androgynous clothing after about 1970 or so seems more difficult to explain: I wonder if it were part of a cultural push to deglamourize motherhood, because that was the era in which concerns over global overpopulation really seemed to spike? Perhaps women who like feminine clothing were discriminated against by employers who feared having to provide maternity leave? (Although that seems to be veering dangerously into conspiracy theory territory!)

IIRC Norway is one Western European country where there's still a lot of enthusiasm for their traditional clothing.

I wonder where the notion originates from, that women's liberation comes from androgyny and traditional "feminine" clothing was an imposition by a misogynistic society? I just find it so sad...

I think the name you're looking for is Deniz Kandiyoti.

@VBirchwood Why (in your opinion) do trousers tend to outnumber skirts/dresses among women today?

How did Confederate uniforms compare to Union ones?

@leenmattar3983 Why would synthetic fibres be inherently lower quality than natural ones?
