Underwing engines permit a lighter structure, as the wing-fuselage junction doesn't have to bear the weight of the engines while in flight.

@Edax_Royeaux That's also why twin-engine pods slung under the wings (as seen on the B-52 bomber) were never used on any civilian jet airliner: the East German Baade 152 had such a configuration but it never entered service.

@johndavidson3424 You're wrong about noise: rear-engined jets tended to have a quieter passenger cabin because the engines were well behind it.
