Dried beans and lentils and chickpeas are cheap to buy. Lentils plus a good quality pasta makes a complete protein. See if you can get an allotment or help with one. If you chat with people, you can get seeds and starters from other gardeners. Check out ethnic stores because sometimes the spices and rice are cheaper there.
