  5. European countries are smaller. People cross borders all the time, encounter foreigners. The US is vast and some states have a very small population and so fewer foreigners. Many can’t afford foreign travel. The choices for language classes in school are fewer. They still start too late- another language should be introduced no later than 6 years of age. If you learn one additional language, it makes it easier to learn others later. If you live in France, it’s sensible to learn Italian or German because it’s likely you will use it for going to another university, for work or on a weekend vacation. Most Americans can’t afford such travel. You might be surprised at how many study languages in their free time despite knowing they won’t travel.
