  4. Good luck in the apartment search. Rent is sky high, and crime is up. Never leave anything in the car. Crime is just as high in good neighborhoods because the criminals find it to be good hunting grounds. Friendliest place is the Quarterdeck in the Des Moines marina. Coffee, beer, wine. Great walk along the pier. People bring their dogs and kids , lots of outdoor seating, a big heated tent in bad weather. Live music, trivia nights. It’s sort of like Cheers- everyone knows your name and your dog’s name. Seattle is famous for the Seattle Freeze but the Quarterdeck is the exception.

  19. I’m shocked that anyone is shocked. The day will come when it’s 5% native Hawaiian. Americans are living in vehicles and tents by the tens of thousands. I volunteer at one of the many large official tent camps. Many seniors waiting for years for low income housing. Lots of young people with jobs but not enough money to rent even a studio. They walk a long way to catch the bus to work. There are veterans waiting for housing too- usually those are the gate guards keeping out the drug addicts. More native Hawaiians live on the mainland than on the islands. They have to leave to be able to afford decent housing to raise families. So they don’t have to live 2 or 3 families to a house. Working multiple jobs to afford food and utilities. Not having time to enjoy the beaches and hiking sometimes with your kids. I can’t believe you are sneering at little houses being so close together. Why should anyone be friendly to you? You are looking at them like they are in a fishbowl.

  20.  @jaylee6769  someone broke in last week to the back of my cottage. He was very surprised to find a raging Irish-tempered lunatic who chased him down he street. Ten minutes later he was reported to 911 by someone else.
