  1. Friendship takes effort. Keeping in touch. Honesty. Helping out when needed - like taking someone to a doctor appointment when they are nervous, help them change a tire, read their poems, encourage them, listen quietly. I’ve been writing letters to my distant friends since I left my home town. I don’t expect letters back, they text or call- I understand life is challenging for free time. I would love for my friends to watch my YouTube videos- but they aren’t into YouTube as I am. If anything, they listen to podcasts. My friends come to the rescue if something bad happens- and I make sure they know I appreciate it. I have been asked to check on people they know who aren’t answering the phone- that was the worst. It’s a good idea to think of friendship in levels of intimacy and time, an inner circle, an outer circle. Don’t move a new person into your inner circle too fast. Be a friend to yourself first. Work on your issues if you need to. Look up red flags of the narcissist do you avoid making friends with that type- it could ruin your ability to trust anyone again ever.
