  35. I had to cross through CA to get home last year— I avoided stopping in all the places I used to love visiting. I don’t know when things will change for the better .

  36. Get a large dog. A gun isn’t much help if you don’t get training and practice at least once a month. Keep pepper spray handy. Get motion- activated lights if you can. Home Depot sells some that work with batteries or solar. They sell driveway alarms for about $15– you can attach to a fence or post, put one on your porch— it has a blinking red light. The other part of the alarm you put inside your house- it beeps if something crosses the beam outside. I leave the same lights on so a criminal won’t notice a pattern of who might be up or not. I leave an old pair of large men’s boots on the porch. If you can’t afford a dog, you could volunteer as a foster carer for the local shelter. Then you won’t have the worry of vet bills etc. I have looked into those Ring cameras and Simplisafe— I’m undecided. I know how you feel-/ the crime has escalated here to a level never known before.
