I was so incredibly close to joining the US Military when I was 18 years old. I was actively studying for the ASVAB and preparing myself in every way I could. Wrestling season had just ended and I was still in great shape. Why didn't I do it? I couldn't tell you. It surely wasn't fear or anxiety and in the end I'm glad that I didn't. As I got older, I had more appreciation for my work and later my wife and family. As far as moral or political reasons go. Why would I train and spill my guts in a conflict created by politicians to enrich themselves? When I saw these younger guys run off to Syria and Ukraine. I could only think of them as fools. You might label them as brave, courageous or fearless, but fools nonetheless. They have raging hormones that push their bodies and minds into action; needing to participate in a movement or conflict. They rush off to a foreign country believing that the narrative that placed them their still remains true. It's only when they're missing a limb with their guts hanging out do they take their last few seconds to realize what they were doing. You are pawn for powerful people to play their sick games; nothing more. I don't think we have a lack of courageous or strong men. I think we have a surplus of people that are waking up to the idea that 'patriotism' and 'country' are an illusion.
