  4. Smacking a small child is especially abhorrent, because they are the least capable of defending themselves. The only values it instills are to say that bullying will get your way, or the notion that you must be naively submissive in order to survive. It's physical assault, traumatic, and causes a form of emotional brain damage. Parents who think this is ok think anything is ok. Sorry, but David Lammy if you're reading even your nice Nigerian Mummy and Daddy were wrong to hit you.

  6. You can hardly believe that there is even an example of someone like this. Maybe his band wasn't quite big enough to cover it up? Such depravity that we all learn about. I've heard of the band, but it's the most famous they've ever been. Where does this sickness come from? How many people think something like this is normal, or becoming even more normal if they do it? Abuse goes back many generations though.

  14. Mr T Ahmed India was a shambolic backward and somewhat brutal place. You needed people to govern you who were smart, and hard but fair. That was where the British came in, and obviously we had the military technology, strategy and war like mind set to do it.

  18. You can't treat the vast majority of everyone else in the world. Eventually our resources become too stretched. Most of us are not wealthy, and the NHS struggles to treat many of us quickly.

  19. ***** Why would I trust you? I wonder if you have ever considered the psychological effect of a grown adult frightening a child into submission, and using some degree of discomfort caused by violence to do this. Have you? It is now widely known that it causes emotional trauma. One sign of emotional trauma is a child, and later adult, that willingly exposes themselves to danger, and neglects their health, leading to early death. Ever known a child who wandered off more than they should. perhaps into a road? It's a sign of trauma, oh do trust me.

I suppose you wonder how do you make everything safe, how do you watch them all the time, how do you move them away from somewhere when they don't want to (kicking screaming etc), right? Well I think we should find ways to do it without intimidation or physical punishment. Have you ever read Parent Effectiveness Training by Dr Thomas Gordon? Personally I think there are lots of grown adults who got away with having less done to them. Some of them become spoilt psychos - but sometimes it's the opposite. If you learn that you get your way by hitting someone, then that's what you'll end up doing to other people. Circular argument maybe, like it could be in the genes. This is how we shape our morality, which is part of the point of punishment, or being told off, not just to keep you out of danger. I notice you don't actually mention morality in this context.

In fact you can semi-spoil and manipulate, which is abusive, and tends to cause narcissistic personality disorder (a fair number would argue). That question, if it's that bad why have parents at all, you're saying? Yes, ultimately it's like a final solution, too repressive, or fascistic, like eugenics. But as we have to appeal to reason instead, well lets be brave enough to say what we see around us, and argue for a better way.

  34. @johnstewartBr3X1T  I suppose making enquiries and playing it by ear. In my experience, rent increases have only happened due to recent events. I have had my own share of good and bad luck. But surely, everyone has to plan ahead. Can this guy not get more benefits? Did he have nothing as soon as he became of 'ill health' or the other guy, who is more or less disabled? I know we can get caught out, and it's unfair what's now happening. Don't get me wrong. But I am very suspicious when media likes tell us what's difficult or easy about life.

  57. The western world is a less pleasant place for men nowadays. Manners are poorer anyway, and women don't respect men as much as they used to. Deference as a compromise, towards men, has morphed into raw resentment and entitlement for women.
