@brustar5152 - Huh? Before the F-35B, the only American VTOL plaform was built by the British and improved under license to produce the B variant by McDonnell-Douglas. Besides Hawker-Siddeley and Yakovlev, there wasn't a ton going on in that space.

@jimnielsen4076 - The fatal error was in failing to allow export of the F-22 to a limited number of strategic allies – namely Japan and Israel. Now, Japan is left without a fifth-gen air superiority platform just as China is rolling out the J-20. They're rushing to complete their own. Allowing F-22 export could have lessened the cost, and perhaps even set aside enough funding for a navalized version that could have been a true replacement for the F-14.
