  1. Huh? The MQ9 is a slow, bulbous prop-driven drone that was designed almost 30 years ago. It has no real defenses against supersonic SAMs, including even ancient ones from the mid-Cold War era. They're not designed to be utilized in contested airspace. At this point, the design is largely outdated and the USAF really does not particularly care about maintaining them. Ukraine, frankly, didn't even want them. Modern ISR drones are more stealthy, though if you fly close enough to a radar, it will see you eventually. That's just simply physics.

The elctro-optical system will record the launch location, and even if IR munitions are being utilized, there will be a centralized air search radar that will alert the SAM battery team to the presence of a threat. It is only after the threat is identified that the crew decides whether a radar or IR guided munition is the best choice for interception. If the radar goes dark, they can fire a JDAM at the launch area using a SNIPER pod (or similar), and if it's still transmitting, a HARM/AARGM will do.
