In fairness, if BMW and Tesla had a baby... it'd be the car version of the F-35.

The Su-37 is a technology demonstrator that doesn't exist. Do you mean the Su-35? It can do cobras. It's cool at air shows.

The real reason for this is that the F-35 is finally combat coded and becoming deployed. In fact, it just performed its first intercept of a Russian bomber. During testing (even advanced testing and training) there were G limits, software limits, and many other impediments purposely placed in its way. Unfortunately, a lot of shoddy journalists simply reported "it lost to an F-16" without caring to compile the facts. This plane is the real deal, and so many positive videos and reports are emerging because people are finally realizing that it's the plane that was advertised all along. I'd rather spend five years working the bugs out than spend five years risking lives and operational advantages in combat.

Malcolm Reynolds - The cost has actually decreased quite a bit recently. For an 'A' variant model the cost is around $89 million. That's only $4 million more than the Saab Gripen-E (which enjoys a reputation as a cheap, but good, combat plane). Ironically, the F-35 is becoming an affordable advanced platform now that it is being manufactured at scale.

Gmail X - See, what's cool here is that the marketing hype is actually true. This plane is literally built for the UK's carriers, BAE had a ton of input, and it is the pride of a wonderful friendship between the US and UK (plus our Aussie friends) that produced something amazing for the defense of both countries. This is an international marvel that should be celebrated.

Hmm... funny. You mentioned the only branch of the U.S. military that does not operate the F-35. I see you really watched and learned... and did your research.

Hoping against hope that Japan develops a supposed "F-22 plus F-35" fighter through its Shinshin project and we get the best of both worlds.

Riiiight... just like every video of a Flanker doing a cobra is sponsored by a shirtless Vladimir Putin riding a grizzly bear. Good planes are good planes.

Americans of a certain political party seem to have disdain for their own country. It's not all Americans. The F-35 is a wonderful product of a partnership between the US and UK. The UK was the only Tier 1 partner on the project. Lockheed-Martin and BAE Systems are really the only two companies in the world that can actually tinker with the thing.

As the (hopefully true) rumor goes, Jack Northrop was shown a mockup of an actual B-2 Spirit before he died, allowing to him to finally realize his dream had come true. It is held by a lot of reliable sources that this happened, but still never truly confirmed. Here in the U.S., we also hope the F-35 does not have to engage in dangerous combat, but we are ever respectful of our brothers and allies in Australia who we know have our back in the Pacific!

All 11 of them that exist, lol.

@TheDrunkenBeard - The F-22 also lacks a helmet-mounted cueing system, for now. That said, with thrust vectoring PLUS all the tech, the F-22 is the undisputed king of air-to-air combat, which you need in the beginning stages of a war. The F-22 can take on the Flankers/J-20s/Su-57s while the F-35 can do SEAD missions and defend themselves against both stealth and 4th-gen adversaries. It's a deadly combination. They've also now connected the Eurofighter Typhoon with the F-22/35 and the kill ratio is absolutely insane. These three platforms (plus the F-15EX and F-16V) working together are unstoppable.
