LockMart should've just bought the entire Yak-141 program from the Russians after they helped work on it anyway (in the short time we were buddies after the Cold War) and developed the VTOL platform around that. As for the RN, this is just a guess, and it probably sounds petty, but I secretly wonder if they went for the ski jump on their two carriers instead of CATOBAR because they wanted to differentiate themselves from the French. If they went CATOBAR their choices would've been the Super Hornet or Rafale-M to equip their air wings, and there's no way the British government was going to buy a French plane that competes with the Eurofighter. I suppose they could've also contracted with Saab for the Gripen Maritime (Sea Gripen) since they operate a small fleet of them for training, but that would come with its own sunk costs since no one else is interested except for the Brazilians in the not-so-near future. Agree with Mover on the USMC. A stealth platform is silly for the purpose of CAS, especially when the Bravo variant requires a bolt-on gun that (I assume) increases its RCS at least a little bit. There obviously was a need to replace the Harrier due to its age, but a clean sheet design which did NOT necessarily have to be a stealth/fifth-gen platform would've been the better option.
