@Jason_g_kennedy - They were also fighting a proxy war with the U.S. If the situation were reversed in 2001 and Russia was arming the Taliban, it would have, likewise, made things much more costly in terms of lives for the U.S./NATO forces. Of course, Russia has no love for these people either, so they're likely glad America has been keeping things under wraps for a couple decades.
