For those wondering, the engine is the GE F414, which is also used in the Super Hornet and the Gripen. Its BVR missile will be the Meteor. The RCS of the initial prototype variant is estimated to be approximately the size of the return on the Eurofighter Typhoon, but it will be reduced significantly in future variants.

@nickmazz9345 - Huh? The F-22's mishap rate is extremely low. The maintenance is not because the plane itself has any issues – it's because the stealth coating needs to be maintained. Also, fourth-gen fighters are generally training with the F-22 while it has drop tanks or radar reflectors attached, and in the case of the Typhoon, in combat the two are never going to be fighting against each other – in fact most of the work over the past decade has been to fuse the Raptor and Typhoon together using a unified datalink so they can compliment each other.

@yrkim3018 - The issue will be parts and supply chain. Finding spare parts for the F-16 is like finding spare parts for a Toyota Hilux or Ford F-150. They're all over, cheap, readily-available, anywhere. KAI will have to ensure its customers that it's ready to undertake a sustainment process.

@aussieboy4090 - Huh? Korea paid Lockheed Martin for their work. They didn't steal anything. And even if it was given for free, that's what allies do – share technology and institutional knowledge to benefit both countries and the global order. By the same token, I'd love to see the U.S. partner with some ROK tech firms now that they are developing radars and other sensors internally. Funny that no actual Americans here, including this one, seem to think anyone "stole" anything. We want the ROK to do well. Some day I'd love to visit.

Cool! Really makes sense now.

@AntonYoon - True. If I were running the ROK's air force, I would probably stick with the Meteor until the U.S. fields the AIM-260. For now, the Meteor strikes me as the better BVR missile since it was purpose-built for that, but the AIM-260 could (and likely will) be superior since it will be brand new.

There's a reason fighters from the same generations tend to look similar even when they are developed separately. The MiG-15 was the most successful fighter of its time and the F-86 was developed with swept wings to counter it. The F-22 set something of a baseline since it was the first fifth-gen stealth fighter, so others appear similar. I suspect either the NGAD prototype or Tempest will serve the same purpose for sixth-gen fighters, whichever is unveiled first.
