I don't understand why Embraer isn't absolutely racing to design an A320/MAX competitor. They have the opportunity to leverage some of the cantankerous relationships airlines have with BOTH of the duopoly manufacturers and provide airlines a third option without having to turn to future Chinese or Russian products, which would likely be politically untenable for airlines in many countries to acquire. It's essentially what Dassault does with its Rafale fighter. Some countries want something "western" but not made by the U.S. or the pan-Euro manufacturers. They've scored some major orders recently.
