@ari_a2764 The Russian language was codified into law as the language to be studied and utilized in all Soviet schools in 1938. It was made optional in 1958, when languages of "national significance," as codified in a separate 1922 law which designated multiple de jure languages depending on territory, were allowed to be taught and studied. So, essentially, the USSR did not designate Russian as its official language, but it outlawed the study of all the others for some time and largely discouraged their study in later years, hoping they would ultimately die out. - Sincerely, an American who just put you in your place.
