Authoritarianism does not begin with tanks and artillery, or people disappearing to gulags in the middle of the night. It begins with mandates that will purportedly "help" you or are for "the greater good." Of course mask mandates are not anywhere near as important as a war, but the key is ensuring that it never comes to that in the first place.

@R_o_b_e_rt It's why people throughout the rest of the world roll their eyes when Europeans try to position themselves as enlightened students of the international order. They're increasingly lazy, ill-informed and dependent on the welfare state for survival. At least they're no longer colonizing half the world.
