It's an absolutely appropriate issue to address if you engage in international commerce or even recreational travel to parts of the world where kidnapping or disappearance is even a minor threat. Personally, I've traveled to Africa and parts of South America where that risk is minimal, but real, and in the unlikely case in which I was a victim of such a crime, it makes sense to designate a trustworthy person to handle my business and financial affairs if I am unable to execute such decisions. For me, that person would be my father (since I am not married). Now, in the case of an animal rescue owner who never seems to leave the suburbs of Tampa, umm...?

It's akin to the moment when someone told L. Ron Hubbard his tax problems could be solved by starting a religion, ha.

This happened in southern New Jersey as well. I distinctly remember a Philadelphia news helicopter tracking a tiger running along I-195 in Ocean County with infrared imagery live on the 6pm newscast as if it was a car chase. Turns out it was owned by a woman locally known as "the tiger lady" who legally owned them and even had a contract with the state to turn over "road kill" to be used as food. After the incident, the state began the process of revoking her license to own exotic animals. The litigation dragged on for years, but eventually she was forced to convey the tigers to a preserve in Texas (if I recall correctly). I'm sure there's plenty if you Google it. It took place in Jackson, NJ.

It's actually the linchpin of the show. Without the infringement, there would have been no $1M judgment, which would have resulted in diminished animosity between Joe and Baskin, which would have likely avoided the prospect of him hiring someone to kill her. A simple dispute over a name and logo is what ultimately ruined Joe's life.

The guy is from Oklahoma, though.

There is a point where assets, especially real property, cannot be protected from a judgment. In theory, the property could be placed in an LLC that is, in turn, owned by a trust – but Baskin would place a lien on the zoo property as well as file a lis pendens that would preclude any sale, essentially making it worthless and even unable to be borrowed against. Pecuniary assets are a bit easier to protect, but the shear cost of protecting those assets through international mechanisms is so high, it would never be worth attempting to do so. If we're talking billions of dollars – sure. A zoo in Oklahoma? The cost of executing contracts with the caliber of professionals who would be need to be hired to shield the assets from judgment would exceed the value of the assets themselves. In other words, there was absolutely no way out of this for Joe.
