Volvos will last forever as long as maintenance is performed somewhat diligently. My last vehicle (a Land Rover) had a Volvo engine in it. I traded her in at 183,000 miles and was still going strong.

The problem is the fact that a Tomahawk cruise missile (which would almost definitely be the one used by the US had they retaliated) is 18-feet long. Can a modern Russian SAM radar not discern the difference between an 18-foot-long object and a Boeing 737? If not, we've greatly overestimated their capabilities.

@Daoistify - "Revenge" for what? They shot down a plane that was almost completely filled with their own nationals, and dual citizens of Iran who lived abroad.

@jeffpowell8308 - Well, once the video emerged of a fiery object striking a plane in the air, exactly where this plane was, the goofing around was over. It's 2019 - someone caught it on video, which we all knew was inevitable.

The only flight I ever took on a 757 was between Newark (EWR) and Reykjavik (KEF). It was a Delta flight and I thought it was very comfortable. Of course, I always find the service on Delta to be among the best, so perhaps that's why I came away with such a good impression.

I'm wondering if, from the pilot's perspective, the best course of action was to get out of Iranian airspace as quickly as possible before hostilities increased rather than sit back and wait for them to get worse (which never happened, but no one knew that at the time). If I were a passenger, I'd have been pretty happy the pilot decided to take off and get out of there.

@tomstravels520 - That is not, actually, correct. The crew of the US ship made approximately 12 attempts to reach the Iranian plane on both civilian and military frequencies and they did not respond. The plane was also flying without its IFF signal, and it approached the ship literally minutes after Iranian small attack boats fired on a US Navy ship. It was assumed, tragically, that is was an F-14 vectored toward the ship on an attack run. The circumstances between these two incidents are very, very different. The US Navy crew, even while under attack, did everything it could to avoid firing.

@AliBaba-vw7mo - Huh? He organized an attack on a US embassy three days prior. He developed the tactic of using IEDs to kill 600 American soldiers. He orchestrated the killing of 1,500 of his own people when they protested the corrupt government he worked for. It's a powerful statement to make, but I'll make it anyway: the world is a better place without this man, who smiled and took selfies as he looked for new ways to kill people, in it.

@cr10001 - Your post doesn't make sense. If the IFF was operating on the civilian frequency, and the calls were made on the civilian frequency, why did the Iranian plane not respond? Also, the Iranian jet was not monitoring the international distress frequency, where the Vincennes also broadcast an emergency communication. Finally, the Iranian jet was absolutely descending since it was on a course to Dubai from Bandar Abbas. All of this, of course, was going on while Iran (as it usually does) was flinging missiles at American ships. I've never seen a country so careless about the lives of its own people, then again, that's why they're protesting in the streets demanding Khameini take a hike.

@cr10001 - They should expect it when their home country is actively firing missiles at foreign warships during an armed conflict – something Iran seems in relish, albeit to its own disadvantage. Common sense. Your hatred of America is making you sound ignorant. Absolutely deranged.
