I'm an American who has traveled to many areas of the world that are supposedly "dangerous" and each and every time, when I've gotten there, I felt perfectly safe – and confident that there were a lot of good people around who would be willing to help if there was ever a problem. There are cities in the U.S. (Baltimore, Camden, Flint, Newark, Detroit, etc.) that are arguably worse than this, and most definitely have a higher crime rate where I would not trust anyone to help me. In most of the world, being poor does not correlate with crime the way it does in the U.S. I don't doubt there IS crime in this village, but I highly doubt there were 700 murders last year like there were in Chicago.

Friends of mine who grew up poor have actually told me that they enjoyed the simplicity of it, looking back. Obviously, the bad outweighed the good overall, but every scenario in life has its pros and cons.

This was a gypsy community, but a lot of that attitude in eastern Europe dates back to the Soviet era. People did not and could not own real property and had no interest in the exterior of where they lived as a result. So over the years, people began keeping their living spaces clean and neat, but ignored the outdoor areas. Unfortunately it's become a cultural trend which has proven difficult to break, though I would hope most people born after 1991 might change this outlook.

It's interesting. Last summer I stayed in a hotel in Seville, Spain that was probably $300 per night. Right by the magnificent doorway in the grand entrance, there was a sign stating that the E.U. had given them millions of Euros to restore and modernize the hotel – a private business that was doing quite well and selling expensive drinks on its rooftop bar. But they can't get a Bobcat to clean up the garbage pile here and provide sufficient sanitation and water? This is why I would've voted for Brexit if I lived in the U.K. What a useless outfit run from ivory towers that is disconnected from any semblance of reality.

@zetos4440 - What is that supposed to mean? I'm from the U.S. and love visiting places like this and interacting with different people than I would at home. Anyone can go on a guided tour of London or Paris or New York. I travel to meet people, see new places and experience new things.
