@82boulou - This is really the most legitimate explanation. The fact of the matter is that SAM systems are just not that important in the defense of the American homeland, so it's not an area where the US has placed many resources. Doctrine has always called for manned fighters to conduct defense, and the F-35 is even being developed to fill a role as cruise missile interceptor. The Aegis system and the SM-3 is a decent fleet defense platform, for what it's worth, but still just not extremely important in wider military doctrine. They'd rather put money into the F/A-XX manned/unmanned fighter for this task. I think the US can actually develop hypersonics very quickly (they were developed a long time ago and largely abandoned) to counter the Russian threat, but Washington is simply not going to sink a ton of money into SAM platforms it doesn't find useful. The very system that is protecting the U.S. capital right now is the NASAMS/SLAMRAAM platform which was developed by a Norwegian firm and eventually de-funded by the U.S.
