Dwane Martin Moyer - The reality is that both sides were protecting themselves from the other. The other poster is 100 percent correct – the Soviets were much more nervous after World War II than the Americans. Having two oceans to separate you from your adversaries is a luxury they did not have – and no fighting in WWII actually took place on the American mainland, so the civilian population as a whole had a different view of the outcome of the war. The Soviets indeed "won" the war, but at a monumental societal cost in human lives as they defended sovereign Russian territory from invasion, another perspective the average American would not have understood. The result was the U.S. believing the Russians were trigger-happy to launch a first strike to avoid a third world war, and the Russians believing the U.S. was hell-bent on launching that war. Neither, of course, was actually the case.

@X.Y.Z.07 - Yes, the US missiles were already in Turkey. The other secret here, and what probably really got Khrushchev fired, was the fact that the Jupiter missiles were already outdated and the U.S. had no use for them anymore. So Khrushchev made a "deal" under which the U.S. would do something is already had planned to do.
