How is it racist to make fun of an actual industry that existed in japan? Used-panty vending machines was real.

@user-c3jdf9lylzse The commercial never said it was "a part of their culture". It's a piece of trivia, which they made fun of. Not every joke about a piece of trivia is a general reflection of an entire culture.

田中加奈と I think you have an over-simplified view of how racism works and why it forms. People don't become racist because of silly television advertisements. Also, even if there are racists, it's not exactly the end of the world. Racism is just prejudice. All people are prejudiced in some way. I fail to see how racial prejudice is any worse than any other form of prejudice.

@likeDC79 : No it's not racist in any way at all. You people are misrepresenting the word "racism" to ludicrous levels.

@mariezeephyllix7736 No they don't. Usually it's personal experiences that makes people racist. All they do is cross-reference personal experience with what certain videos are saying. And they most certainly do not become "racist" due to comedic television commercials. You have nothing to back your claims up.

@VirtueOwl : I read books about germany all the time... But all the information I find is that germans are nazis. So much for "shutting up and reading a book". :P

@mariezeephyllix7736 So what you're saying is: one cannot learn anything about Africans or Africa without visiting africa personally? You completely dismiss the utility of communication? Do you also deny that the moon landing happened, because you haven't landed on the moon yourself?

@SSS-ju2dx : That's just your personal and extremely biased interpretation, which has little to do with the real motivation behind the commercial. Hornbach is only responsible for what they say and do. Not for what wild and biased interpretations people like you make from it.

@SSS-ju2dx : It's not a "stereotype". It's a piece of trivia, which people, INCLUDING JAPANESE PEOPLE find strange and comedic. Stereotyping assumes that ALL citizens of a nation engage in something. Nobody assumes that all, or even a majority of japanese people buy used panties from vending machines. What they do is having a laugh at the absurdity and extremity that there is even such a thing as a market for used panty vending machines in the first place. Stereotyping would be doing something like making the claim that Koreans all eat nothing but Kimchi all day long and nothing else.

@oOBlueBubbleOo : I'm a western native. I don't hate asian people. You can't really use Hollywood as a litmus test, because hollywood is a disgusting cesspit of greed, racism and depravity. Most of people in the west hates hollywood and it's industry as well. I'm always disappointed when they release films based on an asian source material, yet cast only white actors and have them all speak in english because hollywood assumes that everyon is too dumb to read subtitles. Also, hollywood directors usually completely misunderstand scripts and stories coming out of Asia. Ghost in the shell released recently was a perfect example of this.

That Japan actually had vending machines that sold used underwear, and poking fun at that.

@붐붐-e4h : I see throngs of east asian tourists in European countries like germany and sweden all the time. Usually it's 40 year old dudes wearing fishing hats, khaki shorts and around 100 different cameras with different sized objectives hanging from their necks. They seem to take their tourist photography very seriously.

Clearly you weren't born with a sense of humour.

@SSS-ju2dx "That’s not a problem at all since there is no stereotype about white women sniffing armpits. The German ad is controversial because there is surely a stereotype in which the Japanese are considered perverted and also Japanese women are considered to be crazy about white men" The way you phrase this, it gives the impression that you assume that the german company responsible for the ad are trying to create a stereotype, rather than remarking upon that a stereotype might just exist in general. But if english is not your primary language, then I can give you the benefit of a doubt. Also, the western world is plagued by a lot of political outrage activists from the political left and "grievance culture" right now, where they attack and accuse everything of being either racist, sexist, misogynist and stereotyping of minorities. So the subject of stereotyping is kind of sensitive nowadays.

@uwu-oi7fh : I don't think racism is really that bad. It's just prejudice being prejudice. Everybody's got prejudices, and it's impossible to get rid of them from any society. I don't really see why being prejudicial based on the context of race would be any worse than prejudice based on anything else. I'll happily allow japanese people feeling the need to crack jokes at the expense of "stupid gaijins" if it makes them laugh a little. They should extend the same courtesy to others.
