  1. Four months is not "too long". In fact it's not nearly enough to make a functioning soldier. You need between 6 to 12 months at the very least.

  2. If you want your country to be impregnable, mandatory military service is not the way. Cutting back on gun restrictions is. Start letting people own guns. Whenever a potential enemy understands that most civilians are armed, they soon realize how difficult it will be to invade because there will be an armed citizen behind every blade of grass waiting to shoot at invading troops.
