@jtsy7499 : That's not really the case at all. It's part of what an earlier poster already said: dogs were useful for hunting. They sniff out game animals, chase game animals to wear them down and then encircle and corner the game animal for a human hunter to get an easy shot or to move in for a kill. Dogs also helped alert human populations to danger in the night on account of their keen sense of smell. So even the early humans realized the utility of keeping dogs around. Pigs also had their utility since pigs were useful as waste disposal. You fed your pigs the refuse from your kitchen, and in medieval times, you could even feed your pigs the sewage from your toilet/outhouse. Pigs have one of the most hardy digestive systems in nature, so they can survive on eating things that would make other animals sick. In return you got pork when you slaughtered your pigs. So in essence you got food from your waste, which was extremely useful to people back then. However, due to the diet that people associated with pigs, they were also seen as very "unclean" and therefore not fit for pets. Some cultures even took this view to an extreme, like the way muslims even refusing to eat pork. "Cuteness" had little to do with it.

@vegetaprinceofdrip663 Who cares? We still eat squid, octopus and even dolphin and whale meat in many countries. All of them far more intelligent than dogs.

@frankiegamble92 : We've domesticated and bred pigs and cows for an equal amount of time, to the point where domesticated pigs and cows would no longer be able to survive in nature without our care. Yet we still eat those.

"Foie Gras" is absolutely barbaric and should be outlawed. I'm not opposed to eating meat of any animal. But regardless of what type of meat you want to have, you should treat the animal with dignity, respect and ensure to grant the animal a painless death. The animal is dying for you to eat. It's the least a person can do to return the favor. Animal farming in my country is relatively good for the animals. When you drive along the roads in the summer you can see cows out in very large, fenced in, green fields just walking about eating grass or laying around basking in the sun. You can tell that they get good, decent lives of peace and tranquility before their time is up. A stark contrast to the vile factory farming practices and other unethical forms of animal farming, which should all be outlawed in my opinion. Can't really say I care if the meat would become more expensive if forcing all farmers to only have free range cattle. Nobody has a "right" to eat cheap meat, and if people are forced to pay a few extra dollars to ensure that cattle is being treated well, then I'll be happy to pay.

@khalidm5939 Cows and pigs also live in symbiosis with human beings. Yet we still eat those. No, eating dogs is not cannibalism, because dogs are not human beings but a separate species.
5
@khalidm5939 More like you're making a false distinction. Of course cows and pigs have a bond with humans. They depend on humans for their survival, to get food, water and so on. Just like the dogs.

@spongebobsquarepants6270 : So? Cows and pigs are also domesticated. Yet we eat them. Just because western societies bred dogs to be pets, it doesn't mean that ALL societies bred dogs to be pets exclusively. Some societies treat dogs as food, and that's no more horrid than treating cows and pigs as food. Judging other societies for eating different animals than you is hypocritical on so many levels.

@spongebobsquarepants6270 IN THE WEST! In China dogs are raised to be eaten. What part of that don't you understand? Do you seriously believe that western culture of raising animals applies all over the world? Are you really that bigoted?

Where I live, this stereotype is more about Chinese than Koreans. However, I don't have a problem with them eating dog meat, since I find it strange to give some animals preferential treatment over others. My problem with the Chinese is the fact that they treat dogs and other animals really badly, like skinning animals alive or ripping fur straight from the skin of the animal screaming in pain, putting animals in tiny, restrictive cages etc. These animals are losing their lives for you to eat, as well as wearing their fur and hides. The least you can do is treat the animal with some dignity and respect, as well as giving the animal a painless death first. But the Chinese seem to enjoy torturing animals for fun.

@rocknrm99 : "Meant to be eaten"??? According to whom?
3
@VoltPercival : No it doesn't. It's the opposite. Tensed up meat flooded with adrenaline from the animals time of death become overly chewy. There's a reason why the cattle used to make Kobe beef is fed beer as well as being given daily massages. The perfect meat is from a relaxed animal with as few muscle tensions as possible and the perfect fat to muscle distribution. Every chef in the world knows this.

Can't say I see the problem of eating horse meat. It's a farm animal like any other.
2
@hplanet2825 : I never did so however.
2
@lenitaa7938 I know they do. China is quite barbaric in many ways. That said, I don't judge other cultures for eating different kinds of meat compared to mine. In my view: any animal is a viable source of meat. But if you're going to kill it for food, you better provide the animal with a death that is quick and painless or we're going to have a problem.
2
@VoltPercival I can't speculate on the reasons behind the Chinese fondness for animal torture. Some cultures are just inept at fostering basic empathy in people. But I can guarantee you that it has nothing to do with changing the taste of the meat. Also, they do it to animals that they aren't even interested in eating as well, but only to get fur and hides from.

@hahahe5936 So why are old people in China so mean to animals then? What's about the chinese culture that turn old people into animal abusers?
1
@rosebud4387 : So can many kinds of meat from many different animals.
