Makes me happy that Japan still has the death penalty to get rid of people like Shoko. Can't say I care if he was "insane" or not. After certain crimes, execution really is the only cure.

@andys544 : A rabid dog is not responsible for being a rabid dog. But you still have to put it down regardless, because by keeping it alive you risk having it injure or kill more people.

@zakofrx : Frankly, I don't think the death penalty is ever an easy way out in modern societies. Mainly due to the long wait, since trials and investigations and appeals drag on for several years when the death penalty is being considered. And during all that time, the concemned has to sit and stew in a prison cell, filling himself with false hopes that maybe he gets to live and then just have those hopes snatched away at the very last moment. It's probably not intentional, but I think this way makes the death penalty way more agonizing compared to more brutal countries where they basically drag you out to the firing squad or chopping block the very next day after sentencing. In Shoko's case, he had to sit for 8 years hoping not to get executed. And in the end, he got to feel that last sliver of hope being snatched away from him. I don't think being condemned to life in prison is worse than that. At least being condemned for life means you get a final verdict so you're not left wondering.
