  1. All things considered, the survivors were pretty lucky. Plane crashes like these usually don't have any survivors at all. Usually only crash landings do, as in where the pilots notice that something is wrong and have some time to navigate the plane towards the ground at a somewhat safer velocity and angle. In situations where pilots get completely blind sided it's usually game over.
