I don't know about Japanese prisons, but in some prisons, the old fogey inmates tend to be left alone. Maybe it's because of respect. Maybe it's because an old guy isn't seen as a threat by the other inmates, or maybe it's simply because you're not going to raise your status in prison by beating up or shanking a senior citizen. The old inmates who get attacked usually only get that treatment because they're senior officers in organized crime and are still at the job in prison, or if they've done something to kids or women. But a successful 74 year old cat burglar would most likely be left alone in a lot of institutions. His street cred is about as legit as it could possibly get.
