Honestly though, the restaurant business has been a sewer for many years , with severely underpaid staff, terrible working conditions and extensive use of illegal immigrants as cheap labour. So it's kind of a good thing that we'll have a shortage of restaurants, because the reduction in competition means there's an opportunity to clean up the whole industry.

IQ is no guarantee for an academic career i'm afraid. I've got an IQ of 132 for example, but i'm not an academic. All my IQ has done for me is making me a bit better than most at logical reasoning and mental problem solving. But it didn't come with other required skills and traits to make me a successful academic.

@hardwatergaming7965 Immigration definitely makes it worse. The hard part is convincing people that lax immigration laws and border control undermines both the labour code and native employees bargaining position on the job market.

@BurkeanMama It is definitely how competition works in a saturated market. If there are more restaurants around than there is demand for their services, it always means that they will have to compete with prices. Offering food services for less pay per customer. And when the restaurants are earning less per customer, it means they have to impose company austerity measures in order to make a profit. Which means resorting to underhanded and shady practices like forcing employees to work more for less pay, or utilizing illegal labour from illegal immigrants. If there is only a small number of restaurants where tables are always fully booked, the demand exceeds the supply and the restaurants can afford to increase prices for food, and are able to turn a good profit while still paying their employees decent wages and ensuring that working conditions are humane. How this objective fact of market mechanics flew over your head, I can only speculate.

@juliantheapostate8295 Looking at the state of academia nowadays, I have to agree. I guess I was refering to the way it was before, when an academic career required dedication, focus and discipline. My IQ may be above average. But my mind and imagination has always been all over the place, so I find it very difficult to dedicate several year of of my life studying a single subject (like majoring in a subject). So if I tried to major in computer science one year, I will become bored and demotivated with the subject the next year and perform terribly.

@hardwatergaming7965 They can, but not all of them do. And with the restaurant business being a shaky prospect a lot of people will be rethinking their careers and venture into other business sectors, meaning that you'll have a shortage of restaurant staff. Many restaurant owners complained about this due to Biden bucks in the U.S during the pandemic. It put's people like waiters, dishwashers and chefs in a better position to make demands.
