The part about art not having to be about race makes me think of Rowan Atkinson and "Mr. Bean". The character Bean is massively popular all over the world. And the reason behind it is because the comedy sketched that feature Bean are purposefully made to not rely on language or knowledge of cultural contexts. It's like Atkinson and the involved writers tried to strip away as much cultural context from the humour as possible in order to reach a sort of universal "core or comedy" that anyone on earth can understand and find funny. So Bean's race becomes irrelevant. His British background is irrelevant. The language that he supposedly speaks (although he just mutters and mumbles inaudibly most of the time) becomes irrelevant. It doesn't matter if you're from Britain, Egypt, Bangladesh, Uruguay, France or Finland. The comedy in Mr. Bean can be understood by everyone.
