You're right. Russia isn't interested in a conflict since there is nothing in Ukraine that they need. Russia would be able to ignore Ukraine, if Ukraine wasn't governed by a regime that's pro EU and is looking to join Nato as fast as humanly possible.

@akessel92train Putin doesn't want or need more territory. He's already in charge of the biggest country in the world, based on surface area. With vast quantities of natural resources to exploit. The problem is that the U.S and the EU are worried about what would happen if Russia could be open to investment opportunities and turn into an industrial powerhouse. It would upset the current power hedgemony in the world where the U.S and the EU fancies themselves as top dogs on account of their wealth. That said, Putin is required to think geo-strategically, since letting Nato get too close and set up shop in neighbouring countries poses a significant danger to Russia. But he doesn't want this bickering with the Ukraine nor annex further territory. More territory = more borders to guard using an already thinly stretched military to do it. The costs outweigh the gains.

@akessel92train That's assuming that your ultimate goal is to partake in global trade. There are a lot of rumours out of Russia that speaks of moving Russia towards becoming an independent self-supplier of coal, iron, wood, natural gas and so on and it makes sense for Putin's strategy. That said, keep in mind why the Crimean conflict started in the first place. Russia already had it's naval bases at Crimea. It was on Ukranian territory, but they had brokered a deal with the Ukranian government to keep those bases and ports after the Soviet union was dissolved. Then Ukraine went nuts and started talking about joining Nato and the EU. Would be impossible for Russia to allow Ukraine to simply hand over these naval ports to Nato forces, so Russia annexed Crimea and settled for it.

Russia is in the right in this conflict. You really have to dig deep to learn some truth about it, because the same media actors who spread lies about Trump are spreading lies and false narratives about Russia.

Putin is stingy with the lives of Russian soldiers because he's not a communist dictator. The Soviet union is dead. He knows it and has even said it openly and the majority of Russians accept it.

@Anna-tp6bj I don't think you'll be able to convince many people that the governments decision to approach the EU for a future membership wasn't also a springboard into a Nato membership.

@Anna-tp6bj That doesn't seem to be correct. Euromaidan happened before thr annexation of Crimea.
