  1. The deficit of homegrown food is a product of capitalist economies. Once the economy moves beyond agrarian, the capitalist ventures tend to move away from food production and into more profitable ventures, with everyone thinking that they can just import food cheaply from abroad. The capitalist mindset never takes sudden catastrophes or blockades into account and usually end up getting caught with their pants down durinh a war or similar disaster event. That's why any responsible country needs subsidized food production. I don't care if it costs the taxpayers to have the government ensuring that farmers keep farming and produce food in tonnage levels that are sufficient to feed the population, regardless of imports. It's better than the alternative. Like an insurance policy for everyones dinner table.
