I wonder, would the effects be different if the cable was under tension? Elevator cables tend to be very tensioned holding up an entire elevator cabin after all. That's not to say that a single 9mm round would do the trick. The notion is quite silly.

@mattmurphy7030 Makes sense. Also, I seem to recall from that scene in The Matrix that the cable Neo shoots off was much thinner than real elevator cable.

@mattmurphy7030 Cables are surely designed with redundancy in mind right? Like you don't want the cable to fail at the slightest wear or if one or two strands break off. You'd want the cable to basically still be able to carry the load of the elevator even after several strands are visibly torn. Or maybr not? Maybe the engineers just fall back on the emergency brakes?
