@TheRealSpicke : I don't think so. Distillation was a pretty advanced chemical process back then. In fact i'm not even sure most cultures knew how to do it.

@arachnonixon We're talking about ancient times here. Not every civilization had access to it.. Also, yes, it is a chemical process. Grapemash is composed of chemicals (natural and unrefined, sure but still chemicals) and the process of fermenting and distilling alcohol from sugars and starch is also a process of chemistry. "Chemical process" doesn't necessarily mean that refined chemicals have to be involved.
