Not all snipers shoot at the center of mass. In some sniper schools they are taught to shoot at the mouth if possible (but it requires clear visibility of your target). The reason being that if you hit your target in the mouth, the bullet will sever the upper portions of the spinal column, killing the target outright with no possibility for the target to cry out or have muscle spasms that fires a weapon that they maybe holding. It was a long time ago when I read about the subject, but if I remember correctly, police snipers frequently employ this method especially during hostage situations when a suspect might be holding hostages at gunpoint. If you hit them center of mass, they might still be able to shoot their hostage, but when the spinal column is severed it actively prevents the brain from sending that neural signal to the persons finger to be able to squeeze a trigger.

If you want to see an example of fully enclosed headprotection, check out the Ronin helmet manufactured by devtac japan. They're pretty badass and has caught the attention of a few military units across the world.

Also, a gladiator wasn't really intended to die on the arena, nor to kill other gladiators. Gladiator combat was an exhibition sport. Not really thst different from medieval jousting. Hence their armour put greater emphasis on protection than on enabling the wearer to be an effective killer.

@ArchOfficial : With the right kind of optics, anything's possible. Also, with police snipers, they have the fortune of not having to shoot at ranges much longer than 100 meters most of the time.
