What if the object was some form of craft, which emitted some kind of radiation as a part of it's anti-gravitic locomotion? Radiation which a rock would protect against. Perhaps even cloth of a person's robes even, but having your bare skin and eyes too close to it would cause a radiation burn? Idle speculation of course, but it would be an intriguing explanation in my opinion.
