I think that was the idea with 300. It's not meant to be historically accurate regarding spartan fighting habits, but intended to carry on the greek tradition of heroic portrayal. Which is why they're depicted as wearing nothing but red cloaks and leather diapers alongside their helmets and shields in battle. Even Frank Miller himself admitted to going to great lengths and making plenty of arbitrary decisions in order to get the audience to "root for the Spartans" when he made the 300 graphic novel. One example he mentioned is how he made Leonidas KINDLY deny the deformed Ephialtes a place in the phalanx due to his deformity, when the real king Leonidas would probably have laughed in his face and kicked the deformed Ephialtes off a cliff to his death. The real Spartans weren't very sympathetic people after all. They did good at fighting, but in terms of personality they were bred to be narcissistic assholes.
