  2. Isn't it true that Hideyoshi Toyotomi was a commoner from the beginning? Or at the very least a member of a very low ranking samurai family? I remember watching a presentation about the sengoku jidai from a japanese history professor who's name I unfortunately have forgotten. But he said something like that about Toyotomi, and that he was a big reason why so many were willing to participate in warfare, because the war gave people (even commoners) the opportunity to basically be "knighted" for their service and improve their station in society.
