Give Bill the Pony from Lord of the Rings an honourable mention will you! Such a brave little horse.

In an effort to be charitable here: maybe warhorses would've been smaller compared to modern day horses, due to the fact that people in general were smaller back then too. Average height and weight has increased significantly across the world since medieval times due to a wider accessibility to meat and dairy in the diet of humans along with the multiple generations being brought up with this increased diet over time. So if the knights on average would be at the medieval average height in Europe (somewhere between 165-170 centimeters), then a knight in full armour would weigh less compared to a modern European man who is more likely to be in the span of 170-185 centimeters in length). Meaning a smaller horse could bear the weight of a physically smaller man wearing armour. But freaking Shetland Ponies? That makes no sense at all. They would be tiny even by medieval standards.

@metatronyt Be honest... You'd still like to joust at least once in your life, even if you get knocked out of the saddle 😁

@Nick-hi9gx Check the diets of the ethnic groups that haven't changed in height and you'll see why. Also, the Dutch are the tallest on average in the entire world. Common denominator? Massive amounts of meat and dairy in their traditional cuisine. In Japan you could even see height differencrs between regions. The southern regions have a lot more seafood in their cuisine, whereas the northern regions have more meat and dairy. End result: northerners are taller in Japan on average compared to the southerners.

@Nick-hi9gx Also, on the topic of romans. I haven't come across any census reports from ancient rome that listed average height of roman citizens. What we do know is that during extensive periods, the roman legions imposed height requirements for legionaires, so you would not be accepted into a legion if you were too short. But legionaries would be in a minority compared to the overall roman population. So using their height as an average risk getting misleading results.
