For some reason, I get the impression that a lot of people underestimated the Romans in ancient times. And in some ways I can see why. The romans fought in a very orderly and disciplined fashion. From afar, a Testudo formation doesn't look all that terrifying compared to a screaming horde of barbarians swiftly closing in on you. But as many learned the hard way, crashing into a roman formation means it's unlikely you're getting out alive, no matter how hard you and your comrades in arms beat those scutum, you barely make a dent in the Roman numbers, while they quickly counter attack at every given opportunity, slowly but surely thinning out your numbers until eventually only a fraction of your side is left standing, and that's when the Roman legionaires finish you off.
