  1. Calling ancient Rome a "wealthy superpower" is a bit of an understatement too. At it's zenith it was THE superpower. In fact there hasn't been a superpower like it. And yes that even includes the modern U.S. The U.S is wealthy, influential and has very well trained and professional armed forces, don't get me wrong. But doing a proportional comparison in terms of wealth, influence and military power, Ancient Rome at it's height easily dwarfed modern U.S. The Roman Empire, for all intents and purposes, WAS the known world at the time.
