Some ideas that came to mind: wouldn't it be more effective bashing the opponent with the blunt side of the katana instead of attempting a murder stroke? From my experience with the swords, I felt that the handle of a Katana usually feels lighter on account of the very small handguard, whereas the handle-end of a crossguard sword is a bit heavier so you'd have more of an impact with a crossguard sword because of it. Also, due to the lighter handle of a katana, more mass seems to be concentrated on the blade itself, which probably results in more kinetic energy. Second: weak spots on samurai armour: now if we disregard the openings in the armor for a moment: that silk cording holding the armour fastened to the wearer look awfully exposed to me compared to the buckles and straps of full plate European armour. Wouldn't it be plausible that you might be able to slice through the silk cording if you tried to cut at these areas on your opponent and thereby making his armour come loose?
