It's definitely true about the clothes. One has to consider the gender roles in medieval times. A woman was raised by her family to be a good wife. And part of being a good wife, entailed being both a cook and accomplished seamstress. It was a norm rather than exception for a woman to be sewing clothes. Even among noblewomen (in fact ESPECIALLY among nobles). Now with such a market saturated with accomplished seamstresses, custom made clothes from a tradesman (a tailor) paid for with good money would've been exceptional to say the least. So blandly coloured, badly treated and broken down clothing among nobles and clergy should not be seen at all. A married man walking around like that in public would bring shame to his wife. And an unmarried man would bring shame to his mother. Note: I'm not idealizing this division of labour in the middle ages and with my modern values I don't think women should be expected to swe clothes for their families. But back then, this was the norm.
