  1. Well.. You don't want your gunners getting mowed down by stray bullets now do you? Artillery is useless without a crew.

  2.  @samarkand1585  No of course not. But it's not unheard of that enemy infantry might sneak up on artillery positions to kill the gunners crewing the artillery pieces. So if your crew is protected from small arms, then all you need to worry about is anti-tank weaponry and aircraft.
