The concussive force of explosions are amplified underwater, also when an explosion occurs it creates a big displacement of water (essentially a giant air bubble) If the keel of a ship or a sizeable portion of a sub is caught in this air bubble it'll be like this part of the vessel is hanging in mid air for a split second. Which no vessel is designed to hold up to, so it can collapse and snap under either it's own weight, or the tons and tons of sea water rushing in to fill that displacement of water.
